There were two fortifications at the entrance of Tampa Bay guarding the main shipping channel from the Gulf of Mexico. On the mainland north of the channel was Fort Desoto and Fort Dade on Egmont Key on the south side of the channel. Today, both are maintained as beautiful parks and offer many attractions.
